Registering a Domain Name, and forwarding email from that domain to an existing email account

This weeks tip is how to easily and inexpensively forward mail from a domain name to whatever email account you have making it appear that you have a professional email account. Keep in mind that there are some drawbacks to this approach which are listed here:

Drawbacks – These can all make you look very unprofessional

  • If you have just the domain name and no website, people will think you have a website when they see your email address and try to go to it. If the find nothing there, well that speaks for itself.
  • When you forward email to another account, if you aren’t careful in how you setup and reply or send email out, it can come from your free or other email account that can be confusing at the very least.

With all that said, if you do choose to go those route, it’s actually quite simple.

  1. First you need to register you domain with a register, Sac City Tech uses mydomain.com for this. You can get a .COM for about $9.99 per year, assuming you can find the name you want. There are others such as .NET, .BIZ, .ORG and more which the costs vary slightly. Watch out for domain scalpers! If you see a domain that is more than about $25 / Year, especially hundreds or thousands of dollars, that domain is taken and someone is trying to make money off if because they think it’s a name someone will pay high dollar for. Stay away from these and find a name that is available. Also when you register a domain, they will likely offer other things that are optional such as Privacy. That’s another $8-$9 / year which keeps your personal info private if people look up your domain name. Keep in mind that once you register a domain, you must renew it each year before it expires or the name will get locked and go up for grabs if you don’t pay up to get it back. That can end up costing over $100, so make sure to just make the payments or setup autopay.
  2. Once you have your domain name with mydomain.com, you can manage many things about yourself free of charge. You should exercise caution and not change anything you don’t understand. In this case, you simply want to go to the Email Management for your domain, create the email address for your domain: i.e. yourname@yourdomain.com and then add the forwarding destination. The change should take place very quickly, especially if your domain name is older than 24 hours. Make sure to do a test by sending an email to the new address and insuring that it gets to the email account you want it sent to. If it does, the hard part is over and you are pretty much done.
  3. The last thing you may want to do, which is optional, is to configure your email software and/or account so that you can send emails as yourname@yourdomain.com so that it looks like it’s coming from your domain. There’s so many email applications and websites, it’s not feasible to cover that here. The best suggestion is to do a google search for the email system you are using to learn how to set it up correctly.

Again, as mentioned earlier, there are drawbacks to doing this, but it is possible and may make sense for you if money is tight and a website is not desired.
